Level 1 Inspection

What Does a Level 1 Chimney Inspection Call For?

During a Level 1 chimney inspection, certified chimney sweeps examine the following readily accessible components:

Exposed or Capable Components: These are areas that can be accessed for maintenance, inspection, operation, or repair without the need for tools to remove panels, coverings, or doors.

When Is a Level 1 Chimney Inspection Needed?

A Level 1 inspection is the recommended type of inspection under the following conditions:

Venting System Unchanged: If your venting system has not changed.

Continued Use: When you plan to use your chimney as you have in the past.

Ongoing Maintenance: If your chimney is maintained under a continued service plan with the same conditions and ongoing use of the same hearth appliance.

The Condition of the Flue

When examining the flue, your chimney sweep technician will determine whether the chimney liner is free of blockage.

Remember, regular chimney inspections are crucial for safety and efficiency. Schedule your Level 1 inspection annually to keep your chimney in top condition.

Level 2 Inspection

What Is a Level 2 Chimney Inspection?

A Level 2 chimney inspection is a comprehensive assessment performed by a certified chimney professional. It involves both visual examination and specialized technology to inspect your fireplace and chimney system.  The goal is to identify any damaged or faulty components and recommend appropriate solutions.

When Is a Level 2 Chimney Inspection Required?

Change in the System: If you’ve made significant changes to your chimney system (e.g., installed or replaced parts with different capacities or efficiencies), a Level 2 inspection is necessary.  Examples include replacing an old chimney flue with a different type or dimension (e.g., switching from wood-burning to gas).  After such changes, lingering issues may exist, and inspection ensures safety and efficiency.

 Change in Ownership:

When buying a house, ensure everything is perfect—including the chimney.  A Level 2 inspection provides peace of mind by thoroughly assessing both interior and exterior components.  Video scanning technology is often used to inspect hard-to-reach areas.

What Does a Level 2 Inspection Cover?

Interior Inspection:  The chimney sweep examines all accessible areas from inside and outside, including attics, basements, and crawl spaces.  Video scanning allows inspection of the internal venting system.

Exterior Inspection:  Inspectors check flashing, chimney support, chimney cap, chase cover, and shrouds.  Decorative shrouds should adhere to manufacturers’ recommendations.  Measurement of Interior Dimensions:  Accurate measurements of the chimney’s interior dimensions are taken.
